You’ve probably experienced this: you are going about your normal daily activities when all of a sudden you think, “wait did I lock my car?” Parking on a university campus may require some extra care, but we are here to offer some tips. Just like making sure you lock your dorm or apartment door and windows, Cal Poly Police Department and Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) wants to remind you to lock your vehicle, amongst some other safety tips when parking on campus.
- Always lock your doors when you step away from your car
- Do not leave valuables unsecured in your vehicle, particularly in plain sight
- Do not forget your keys in the vehicle or ignition
- Park in a well-lit area
- Always be observant, do not leave your car if you notice anything suspicious
- Back into parking spots for a quicker and safer exit
- When approaching your vehicle hold your keys in the way you would hold a house key. The key itself can be used as a form of protection if needed.
- To reach the Cal Poly Police Department, call or text 805-756-2281 for assistance 24 hours, seven days a week
The Cal Poly Police Department and TAPS would also like to take this opportunity to remind you about two parking permits that are available to all residents that can be purchased before winter break. Yes, we said all residents, including first-years! In addition, the Winter Term parking permit waitlist opened on November 23 at 10 a.m. Permit awards will be announced on December 16 and January 4 via a lottery system.
Gap permits are available for any resident staying on campus or needing long-term parking over the break. These permits are available now on a first-come, first-serve basis for $105. Students can join a waitlist and/or buy a Gap permit by accessing their parking account.
As always, happy and safe parking from Transportation and Parking Services and the Cal Poly Police Department!
