Navigating Construction: A Guide to Cal Poly Campus Projects in Summer 2023

From the creation of the John Madden Football Center and a reconfiguring of the Administration Building parking lot to interior renovation at the University Union and a Technology Park expansion building, this summer will see nearly a dozen major capital projects get underway in support of the Cal Poly Master Plan.

While all this work enhancing the quality of university life is scheduled over the summer for the convenience of a lower campus population, it can be not so convenient for the staff who are present.

To help staff navigate and plan we’ve compiled a list of the exciting projects starting this summer as well as the affected roads and parking lots.

John Madden Football Center

Work begins: Summer 2023

This new facility will provide state-of-the-art amenities for the Cal Poly football program, including a new locker room, coach offices, team meeting rooms, weight room, and training facilities. It not only caters to the team’s daily needs but also serves as a recruitment feature to attract top-quality student-athletes to campus.

Comerford Pavilion

Work began: March 20

The new tennis clubhouse will be located on court 7 of the Mustang Tennis Complex, to the south of Mott Athletics Center and will feature locker rooms, coach offices, student-athlete lounge space, and an outdoor spectator area for viewing matches. The clubhouse serves as the entrance to the athletics side of campus near the Mott Athletics Center and the Recreation Center, at the intersection of Hathaway Avenue and Longview Lane. The project, with a budget of $7.7 million, is funded primarily by The Comerford Family and is expected to open in the fall of 2024.

Spanos Stadium Scoreboard

Work begins: July 10

The location of construction is the northern end zone area of Spanos Stadium. The existing scoreboard will be replaced with a larger LED video board, offering higher definition. This upgrade will enhance the spectator experience during events held at Spanos Stadium.

A1 Parking Lot Reconfiguring

Work begins: June 26

The A1 Parking Lot, adjacent to the Administration Building, will undergo a complete remodel to increase its overall parking capacity. The redesigned parking lot will feature improved pedestrian and vehicular circulation routes. The landscaping around the site will also be refreshed to align with the campus' greater landscape vision. The A1 Parking Lot is expected to reopen in late fall 2023.

Technology Park Expansion

Work began: May 10

Construction of a second building in the Cal Poly Technology Park will create an additional 16,000 gross square feet on two stories to accommodate off-campus organizations engaged in applied research and development. This expansion will increase opportunities for industry collaboration with Cal Poly students and faculty. The project, with a budget of $12 million, is anticipated to open in spring 2024.

Ag Housing Project

Work begins: June 26

The Ag Housing project will construct two new six-bedroom houses on the site of the former Beef Unit. These houses will be occupied by student employees from the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences working at nearby agriculture facilities.

University Union Renovation

Work begins: June 19

Renovation work in the University Union continues this summer on the building’s first floor. This includes refreshed lounge and study areas with new seating as well as completion of the fifth and final phase of fire sprinkler installation in the building. The project will also replace key pieces of the building’s electrical infrastructure outside the building along Poly View road.

Building impacts: The entire first floor of the building will be closed from June 19 to Sept. 14 including Craft Center, Multi-Cultural Center, Starbucks, Market University Union, Mustang Station, Red Radish and the bowling alley. Starbucks will maintain service via a mobile unit located in the University Union Plaza during the closure.

Poly View Road is planned to be closed to vehicle traffic, June 19 - July 7. There will be no pedestrian impacts.

Sport Complex Road Repairs

Work begins: June

Sports Complex Road adjacent to the upper sport complex will undergo repairs to address damage from previous winter storms.

Flagging traffic to the Swine Unit

Ag Science Building Roof Replacement

Work begins: June

The Agricultural Sciences building (Building 11) will have its roof replaced to fix leaking issues.

Parking Lot Repair Projects

Several parking lot projects will also be taking place throughout the summer, involving resealing, re-asphalting, and restriping. The work will be phased, with one lot impacted at a time. The specific dates for each lot closure have not yet been determined. These parking lots include G2, H4a, H4d, H4e, C2d, and C2c will undergo pavement repairs and replacements. PAC Plaza

Work begins: July 2023

Location:

Entrance Plaza in front of the Performing Arts Center (#06)

This project will enhance the existing PAC Plaza adding seating, shade, and greenery. The renovated plaza will improve the experience of PAC visitors before and after events as well as students on non-event days.

Road Impacts:

Closure of the PAC “drop-off loop” when necessary

Building 25 Exterior Improvements

Work begins: July 2023

Location:

Around the exterior of Faculty Offices East (#25)

This project will enhance the exterior aesthetics of the Faculty Offices East building. The building itself will be painted and new exterior signage will be added highlighting the new Bailey College of Science and Mathematics name. Existing outdoor seating will be refreshed, and other new seating areas will be added underneath shade trellises. New landscaping will be added on both sides of the building.

Aside from the construction projects listed above, there are also ongoing projects on campus. The 1901 Marketplace (Building 19) is currently under construction on the west side of the University Union. The Kennedy Library Transformation is set to begin on August 25, at the Robert E. Kennedy Library, resulting in the closure of the back end of C7 parking spaces which will serve as a location of temporary study space throughout the project duration.

Moving trucks will be active in various locations, including Dexter Road, Cuesta Avenue, College Avenue, South Perimeter Road, South Poly View Drive, and Grand Avenue.

These projects aim to enhance the campus infrastructure, support academic programs, and provide better facilities for students, athletes, staff, and the community. While the construction may bring temporary inconveniences, it is important to stay informed about the projects' locations, timelines and impacts to ensure a smooth campus experience. The university will focus on spreading awareness to keep the Cal Poly community well-informed about ongoing and upcoming capital projects.
