With so many visitors new to campus and the city the potential for accidents is increased. However, with a little planning and preparation everyone can safely experience the life of a Cal Poly Mustang.



Cal Poly’s 32nd annual Open House, a showcase of the campus and the community, will take place April 10–12, 2025.



The road is shared by bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians, all trying to reach their destinations safely and all dependent on those around them to exercise care.



Open House is one of the most popular events on campus each year, it’s going to be crowded. Here are some tips to help visitors Go Safely.



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Wear comfy shoes and plan on getting those steps in. With so many people on campus riding any type of micro mobility device is not safe or allowed.</li>



<li>Leave your electric scooter at home. As is always the case electric scooters, skateboards, one wheels and other micro-mobility devices are not allowed on campus.Use Mustang Shuttle. Available to current students, faculty and staff, the shuttle will run its regular day schedule on Friday and night schedule on Friday and Saturday.</li>



<li>Ride <a href="https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/public-works/slo-transit/trip-planning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SLOTransit</a> and <a href="https://www.slorta.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTA</a> to campus. <a href="https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/public-works/slo-transit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SLO Transit</a> and <a href="https://www.slorta.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTA</a> will be serving the campus with modified service and routes. As always SLO Transit is free for students and staff and will help visitors avoid searching for parking. Visitors attending Open House can also utilize SLO Transit for free Friday and Saturday – simply let the driver know you are here for Cal Poly Open House.</li>



<li>Visitors must have a pre-paid parking permit to park on campus for Open House. For visitors who did not secure a parking permit, shuttles are available from local hotels. More information about these shuttles is available on the <a href="https://orientation.calpoly.edu/open-house/guest-parking-and-transportation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Student and Transition Programs webpage</a>.</li>

Know the road closures. Fun events like the parade and Club Showcase will close some roads.

There are also a number of options to make getting to campus more convenient. Mustang Shuttle will be running on&nbsp;Friday, April 11, and is a great option for rides from the H1 Wine and Vit parking lot. Download the &#8220;Mustang Shuttle&#8221; App from the Apple Store or Google Play and track the shuttle so you know exactly where it is.



To inform and encourage faculty, students and staff to get around campus safely and promote a safety culture, Cal Poly Public Safety has been partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety on a <a href="https://gosafelyca.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">“Go Safely” campaign</a> that will promotes a “Safety Culture” where students faculty and staff make informed choices about how to Get Around Safe.

How to ‘Go Safely’ During Open House

As an award-winning leader in sustainability, Cal Poly is dedicated to lowering its environmental footprint on its&nbsp;<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/journey-to-zero-where-we-are-and-where-we-need-to-go/">Journey to Zero</a>.



Over the past three decades, Cal Poly has implemented several initiatives that have brought campus closer to its carbon neutrality goals by 2045, zero waste and water resiliency.



Reaching these goals will require an ongoing commitment from students, faculty and staff.



So, to make joining the Journey to Zero easier, we’ve compiled some helpful tips to include in your daily routine:



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Dispose of trash, recycling and compostable <a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/sustainability/campus-action/zero-waste/what-goes-where" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the right bin</a>. This helps to keep down recycling contamination. Contamination is when something that cannot be recycled is put in the recycling bin. This includes food and liquids which can cause mold that eats at the fibers in paper and cardboard so it can&#8217;t be turned into new paper. Mold can spread to other accepted items like bottles or cans, lowering their value.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Conserve water by turning off your shower or sink when not actively using it. <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/www3/watersense/kids/tap-off.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">According to the EPA</a>, just by turning off the tap while brushing teeth in the morning and before bedtime, you can save up to eight gallons of water! That adds up to more than 200 gallons a month, enough to fill a huge fish tank that holds six small sharks!</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Reduce energy use by turning off unnecessary lights and shutting down computing equipment, such as printers or scanners. Will shutting off lights in empty rooms save you a ton of money? No, but if every household in SLO county shut off lights in empty rooms, that would be more than 100,000 lights. That’s electricity that doesn’t need to be generated. That’s savings.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Carpool, take the bus or ride a bike. Cal Poly offers many <a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/parking/commutingtocampus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable commute options</a> including free rides on SLO Transit buses for anyone with a Cal Poly ID, free parking for vanpools and great Rideshare networks for students faculty and staff.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Participate in campus sustainability clubs and events to engage in environmental sustainability activities throughout the year. From the Real Food Collaborative to Surfrider, Cal Poly is home to over a dozen <a href="https://www.asi.calpoly.edu/sustainability/sustainability-clubs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainability-based clubs</a>. Who wouldn’t want to be part of the Garden Club.</li>
</ul>

<li>Lastly, share Cal Poly&#8217;s Journey to Zero by <a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/sustainability/journey-to-zero/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">downloading these communication assets</a> and displaying them in your dorm, classroom and social media.</li>

Join Cal Poly’s Journey to Zero

<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a><a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a>Meet Gus Flusser, a third-year computer engineering major developing fantastic work at Cal Poly.



Whether using ScopeBuilder, a generative AI tool, to improve procurement processes or working with real customers at the Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), Gus finds success in his everyday Learn by Doing.



Last month he presented alongside Cal Poly’s chief procurement officer, Darin Matthews, at the Auxiliary Organizations Association’s Annual Conference about his work on Scopebuilder.



Gus recently found time to sit down and talk about working at the DxHub, what it was like presenting to a room full of people and his definition of success.



What is your favorite part about your major? My favorite part about my major is the flexibility. I am able to delve into both electrical/computer hardware projects as well as software projects, both of which I am passionate about!



What is working at the DxHub like? Working at the DxHub is a dream! All the people there including my colleagues/peers and bosses are so supportive and engaging, and they all push me to be my best self. The solutions that we work on developing are nuanced and interesting, and when we complete development of a solution it is always so exciting and satisfying. The DxHub gives me the chance that no other college experience can give, which is to work on building products for real customers and interacting with them and other customers in demos, meetings, presentations and at conferences!



How was presenting at the Auxiliary Organizations Association (AOA) Conference? I am so grateful that I was able to present at the AOA conference in San Diego. It goes to show how supportive everyone at the DxHub is for making it possible for me to attend the conference. I was definitely scared to present in front of a room full of people, but because everyone was so helpful and supportive we had a great demo and presentation.



If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?



If I could go anywhere right now, I would want to go to Alaska or Iceland. I’ve lived in SoCal almost all my life and I want to see nature in a place that is colder and further from the equator.



Are you a morning person or a night owl?



I am definitely not a morning person! I am more of a night owl as I often stay up later working on projects or playing games with friends.



Who would play you in a movie about your life? Gosh, I don’t know. I can’t see a movie about me being made! If one was made, I have no idea who might play me. I guess someone like Isaac Hempstead Wright (Brandon Stark in Game of Thrones), maybe? He’s close-ish in age to me and sort of looks like me.



What&#8217;s your definition of success? My definition of success is to be fulfilled. I know I am always happiest when I am doing something I love, like hanging out with friends and family, building things with my hands or my computer, and working to solve problems to make the world a better place.

Using AI to Improve Campus Processes, Meet Gus Flusser

<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a><a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a>How does one make space for student success? At Cal Poly, it begins with efficiently using available physical space.



The <a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/facilities/planning-capital-projects/project-news/space-optimization/">university’s Space</a><a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/facilities/planning-capital-projects/project-news/space-optimization/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> </a><a href="https://afd.calpoly.edu/facilities/planning-capital-projects/project-news/space-optimization/">Optimization</a> initiative is crucial to growth and a key to sustaining Cal Poly’s academic reputation and mission.



In practice, this means strategically relocating all staff-serving amenities from different locations across campus into one building and putting all student-facing centers into a conveniently located facility — creating convenience and efficiencies.



Moving these entities then makes their old space available for academic purposes such as classrooms and labs.



The largest initiative update has been the&nbsp;<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/mustang-business-park-is-open-for-business/">acquisition of Mustang Business Park</a>&nbsp;in 2023 and the&nbsp;<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/mustang-business-park-all-things-new-plus-a-grand-opening/">relocation of non-academic staff</a>&nbsp;to this off-campus facility in 2024. This move opened 50,000 square feet of critical student-serving space in the campus core.



The University Space Committee — a group of stakeholders from across campus affected by this change — are determining the best and highest use of campus facilities.

Making Space for Student Success

As a third-year architecture major, Dhruvi Jain frequently dives deep into the world of design and creativity. Not only in her studies, but during her work at the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
From setting up the lobby and moving accessible seating to greeting and guiding visitors or scanning tickets, every shift is about making things run seamlessly. It’s a behind-the-scenes effort that brings the magic of the performances to life.
Jain recently stepped away from her role at the PAC to talk about her hometown, goals after graduating and an important life lesson.
What do you hope to do with your degree? 
I want to create architecture that truly matters- spaces that tell stories, breathe new life into historic structures, and make people feel at home. My goal is to repurpose the old, infuse it with purpose, and design places where communities can thrive, connect and find comfort.
What do you like about your job at the PAC? 
Oh, where do I even begin? This job is so rewarding! I get to meet incredible people every day and contribute to making their time at the shows comfortable and memorable. The best part? The team! The staff and ushers are genuinely the kindest people. Plus, the flexibility of the schedule is a lifesaver-it fits perfectly with our busy lives as students, offering both weekday and weekend shifts. It’s a job that truly supports us, and I couldn’t ask for more.
Are you from San Luis Obispo? If not, where are you from, and how did you end up here? 
I’m from Bangalore, India, a vibrant city full of energy, culture and endless charm. Moving to SLO County was a leap into the unknown, driven by my dream to study in Cal Poly’s renowned architecture program. Once I arrived, I fell in love not just with the program, but with everything about this place. The stunning landscapes, the welcoming community, and the slower pace of life have made it feel like a second home.
Where would you rather be right now? 
Sipping chai on a balcony in Bangalore during the monsoon rain, watching the world slow down as the city comes alive with the sound of raindrops. Pure bliss.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? 
“Trust the process.” Whether it’s a design project or life itself, this advice reminds me to keep going, even when things get messy or uncertain.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you? 
That growth happens outside your comfort zone. It’s scary at first, but every time I’ve stepped out, I’ve discovered something incredible about the world and about myself.
What tops your bucket list? 
Building a secret treehouse in the middle of a rainforest, where I can sip hot chocolate while watching wildlife and listening to the rain. Bonus points if it’s accessible only by a rope bridge or zipline.

Making a Difference at the PAC and On Campus: Dhruvi Jain

Cal Poly Partners Plaza opened its gates to the campus community earlier this month, celebrating the new 14,200-square-foot, tiered pavilion in the north end zone of Spanos Stadium.
With three separate and distinct terraces, the plaza is home to an amazing field view that creates a continuous connection to the action on the field. It’s an end zone experience like no other with two unique culinary and beverage venues and one stand-alone drink concession.
“We wanted to create something that would enhance the fan experience, complement the John Maddon Football Center and continue to push the Mustang athletics programs forward with better facilities,” said Cal Poly Partners CEO Cody VanDorn. “The opportunity was there to offer fans an immersive college athletics experience that is uniquely Cal Poly, and we took it.”
The plaza is available for athletic events and concerts and will offer its food venues Monday through Thursday during the academic year, providing a convenient space for Cal Poly community members to gather and eat on the west side of campus.
The plaza also offers exclusive, private hospitality spaces, customizable catering and beverage service, and a turnkey VIP experience for company picnics and employee or corporate events.

Cal Poly Partners Plaza Opens

Over 150 staff members have moved out to the Mustang Business Park, a new off-campus, student-serving facility.
The move out to the Mustang Business Park offers staff a new, state-of-the-art workspace, spread across two stories and also opens up much needed room in the Cal Poly campus core that will be transitioned into student serving spaces.
The Mustang Business Park will also offer staff several upgrades and benefits, including free parking in more than 250 spaces, technology upgrades for video conferencing and scheduling, more flexibility with hoteling space and the ability to come and go, a full kitchen, easy access to San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, and extensive meeting and collaboration spaces.
And with the move of staff out to Mustang Business Park, that will eventually free up more than 200 university parking spaces.
In alignment with the <a href="https://masterplan.calpoly.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2035 Master Plan</a>, the Mustang Business Park is a step closer to upgrading and expanding Cal Poly facilities to better educate students and support faculty and staff.

Mustang Business Park: All Things New, Plus Free Parking

That small computer in your pocket can get you unlost, turn your high school Spanish into the real thing, hail a cab and even, when absolutely necessary, enable you to have a verbal conversation with another human being.



On top of all the amazing things that a smartphone can do, it can also keep you, and your friends, safe in those not fun moments, when something bad has, or could, happen.



In the spirit of education, we have put together a list of safety features that your iPhone or Android have built in, and how to use them. Hey Siri, call 911.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Automatically call the local emergency number and share your location</h3>

<li>Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons at the same time until the Emergency Call slider appears.</li>

<li>To make your Medical ID available from the Lock screen on your iPhone, turn on Show When Locked. In an emergency, this gives information to people who want to help. To share your Medical ID with emergency responders, turn on Share During Emergency Call. When you make a call or send a text to emergency services on your iPhone or Apple Watch, your Medical ID will automatically be shared with emergency services.</li>



<li>Enter health information like your date of birth, allergies, and blood type.</li>



<li>Tap Done.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Request Roadside Assistance via satellite</h3>



Using iPhone 14 or later with iOS 17, you can text for roadside assistance when you&#8217;re outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

<li>In the address field, type &#8220;Roadside.&#8221; When you&#8217;re off the grid with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, you&#8217;ll see the option to request Roadside Assistance via satellite.</li>

<li>Follow the onscreen instructions to connect to a satellite and request help.</li>

With the Emergency Sharing and video recording turned on, these actions will start while the call is placed to emergency services.

To help responders find you, your phone&#8217;s location can be sent when you dial or text an emergency number, like when you dial 911.

<li>To grant the Safety app &#8220;While in Use&#8221; location permissions.</li>



<li>An internet connection with Location Services turned on.</li>

<li>Select who you want to share your real-time location with.

Use a safety check when you walk in an unfamiliar area or go to a party. You must grant &#8220;While in Use&#8221; location permissions to the Safety app.

Mark yourself safe



When it&#8217;s time to check for your safety, you&#8217;ll get an alert for 60 seconds before emergency sharing begins. If you mark yourself safe, the emergency share will be canceled. You can stop the safety check at any time through the notification. If you don&#8217;t choose one of the options in 60 seconds, emergency sharing will begin.

How to Use Your Smartphone As A Safety Device

This summer, Cal Poly will embark on a 10-year program to expand and improve campus housing to enhance the residential student experience and promote student success.



The Future Housing Program will add 3,000-4,000 beds to campus housing and incorporate major renovations to University Housing’s six red brick residence halls in multiple construction phases to ease demand, accommodate growth and address aging facilities.



The CSU Housing Proposal Review Committee approved the Future Housing Program back in 2023. The full program concept will be submitted to the CSU for the Board of Trustees to consider at its July meeting.



Construction on new housing is scheduled to begin in fall 2024, with the first phase opening in fall 2026 and subsequent phases opening every year thereafter, with the final phase of construction being completed in 2030.



Significant parking lot and road closures are set to happen on Monday, June 17.



Lots R1, K1 and K2, located behind the North Mountain and Red Brick residence halls, will be permanently closed. Klamath Road — the backbone of the Future Housing Program infrastructure — Deer Road and Mountain Lane will also be closed, with limited access to authorized vehicles and essential services.
