Open Call for Public Art

The Cal Poly Corporation is inviting proposals for the design and creation of a mural to be installed in a soon-to-be-renovated outdoor corridor on campus.

The Via Carta Mural Project is seeking artist proposals to transform a divided triptych wall at the intersection of Highland Drive and Via Carta into a vibrant mural that encourages student and community interaction while highlighting the agricultural bounty and beauty of the Central Coast.

“This mural and the creation of an inviting outdoor living area will enhance a major gateway into campus,” said Andrea Burns, associate executive director, Commercial Services for the Cal Poly Corporation. “The project continues Cal Poly Corporation’s commitment to making the campus’ outdoor spaces beautiful while enriching the student experience. It’s an example of the many creative partnerships forged between the Cal Poly Corporation and the university. The mural project has brought together faculty, staff and students across multiple colleges and disciplines.”

A public Request for Proposals was issued for artists to submit concept proposals by May 16.

Artists are being asked to consider themes that display the valuable contributions migrant workers and farmworkers make to the Central Coast as well as Cal Poly students’ involvement in agriculture.

A mural committee comprised of an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff, students and community members will review submissions and select an artist. The finalist will be commissioned to install the mural on the exterior wall of the Food Processing Building (No. 24), adjacent to the Campus Market this June and July with a public unveiling and celebration in early fall 2022.
