The growing popularity of electric scooters, skateboards, one wheels and other micro-mobility devices over the past five years has increased safety concerns and complaints from Cal Poly community members about near collisions and close calls with pedestrians.
Did you know that most micro-mobility devices are prohibited on campus? In simple terms, only automobiles and bikes are allowed on campus.
This begs the question on everyone’s mind. Why?
It’s due to the campus hillside topography and increasingly congested pathways. To put it frankly, they can’t stop quickly at speed. Which is also why bikes can’t be ridden on walkways. It’s just not safe.
To help make sure everyone knows this fun fact and to give faculty, students and staff tips on how to get around campus safely, Cal Poly Public Safety has partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety, in a “Go Safely” campaign.
Launching this Spring, Go Safely is an educational program that will promote a safety culture encouraging and informing students, faculty and staff how to get around safely.
The road is shared by bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians, all trying to get to their destinations safely. Bicyclists and pedestrians need drivers to be safe to keep them safe, and drivers need those around them to exercise care.
The Cal Poly campus is a space where all community members can move around safely. To keep that going strong, everyone must share the road and safety responsibility. That includes choosing the smart move and route to class, residential hall, dining venue or work.
To help the Cal Poly community get around safely, and legally, we compiled Five Tips on Getting Around Campus Safely to ensure everyone’s commute safety and wellbeing.
