<a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a><a href="https://inside.calpoly.edu/author/cal-poly-administration-and-finance/"></a>During Open House weekend thousands of prospective students and their supporters will be visiting Cal Poly and experiencing San Luis Obispo for the first time and it’s important that everyone know how to get around safely.



With so many visitors new to campus and the city the potential for accidents is increased. However, with a little planning and preparation everyone can safely experience the life of a Cal Poly Mustang.



Cal Poly’s 32nd annual Open House, a showcase of the campus and the community, will take place April 10–12, 2025.



The road is shared by bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians, all trying to reach their destinations safely and all dependent on those around them to exercise care.



Open House is one of the most popular events on campus each year, it’s going to be crowded. Here are some tips to help visitors Go Safely.

<li>Wear comfy shoes and plan on getting those steps in. With so many people on campus riding any type of micro mobility device is not safe or allowed.</li>



<li>Leave your electric scooter at home. As is always the case electric scooters, skateboards, one wheels and other micro-mobility devices are not allowed on campus.Use Mustang Shuttle. Available to current students, faculty and staff, the shuttle will run its regular day schedule on Friday and night schedule on Friday and Saturday.</li>



<li>Ride <a href="https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/public-works/slo-transit/trip-planning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SLOTransit</a> and <a href="https://www.slorta.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTA</a> to campus. <a href="https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/public-works/slo-transit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SLO Transit</a> and <a href="https://www.slorta.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTA</a> will be serving the campus with modified service and routes. As always SLO Transit is free for students and staff and will help visitors avoid searching for parking. Visitors attending Open House can also utilize SLO Transit for free Friday and Saturday – simply let the driver know you are here for Cal Poly Open House.</li>



<li>Visitors must have a pre-paid parking permit to park on campus for Open House. For visitors who did not secure a parking permit, shuttles are available from local hotels. More information about these shuttles is available on the <a href="https://orientation.calpoly.edu/open-house/guest-parking-and-transportation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Student and Transition Programs webpage</a>.</li>

Know the road closures. Fun events like the parade and Club Showcase will close some roads.

<li>California Boulevard will be closed to through traffic from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the &#8220;University Welcome&#8221; event at Spanos Stadium, please plan to enter campus through Highland Drive</li>



<li>University Drive at Highland Drive will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li>Saturday, April 12
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Grand Avenue will be closed to through traffic at Deer Road from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.</li>



<li>North Perimeter at Village Drive will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.</li>



<li>University Drive will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m.</li>

There are also a number of options to make getting to campus more convenient. Mustang Shuttle will be running on&nbsp;Friday, April 11, and is a great option for rides from the H1 Wine and Vit parking lot. Download the &#8220;Mustang Shuttle&#8221; App from the Apple Store or Google Play and track the shuttle so you know exactly where it is.



To inform and encourage faculty, students and staff to get around campus safely and promote a safety culture, Cal Poly Public Safety has been partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety on a <a href="https://gosafelyca.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">“Go Safely” campaign</a> that will promotes a “Safety Culture” where students faculty and staff make informed choices about how to Get Around Safe.

How to ‘Go Safely’ During Open House

You studied, you applied, and — woohoo! — you were admitted. Now it’s time to join family members, community members and returning alumni to explore all Cal Poly has to offer during&nbsp;<a href="https://orientation.calpoly.edu/open-house/home">Open House 2019</a>, taking place April 11–13.



Before you head to the rolling green hills of San Luis Obispo, however, check out these helpful tips to make your first Mustang experience the best it can be.

<li>RSVP First things first, <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cal-poly-open-house-2019-tickets-54778335476?aff=NSTPwebsite">make sure you register online</a> to attend Open House. Grab your ticket on Eventbrite well in advance to avert any last minute crisis. Then, check out all the <a href="https://guidebook.com/g/openhouse2019/">events</a> you want to attend.</li>



<li>Take SLO Transit or RTA buses for free! Whether you’re staying in San Luis Obispo or anywhere throughout the county, you can ride for free. Riding a SLO Transit or RTA bus to and from campus is FREE with your Open House registration. All you have to do is show the driver your Open House ticket on your mobile device, or a printed copy, and you can ride for free both Friday and Saturday to avoid the chaos of parking.</li>



<li>Enter the Free Ride Friday Contest Feeling lucky? Like and comment on the Free Ride Friday contest on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/insidecalpoly/">Administration &amp; Finance Facebook page</a> to be entered for a chance to win Apple AirPods or a Starbucks gift card. Now is your chance to share your experience using alternative transportation during Open House. One lucky winner will be chosen Monday, April 15, at 3 p.m. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/insidecalpoly/photos/a.2081638922066389/2444581702438774/?type=3&amp;theater">and announced here</a>.</li>



<li>Wear Comfortable Shoes You might have transportation figured out but strap on your Fitbit because you won’t believe your step count this weekend. When roaming around campus, notorious for its sharp inclining hills, be sure to cushion your feet with comfortable closed-toed shoes. And know that if nothing else, you’ll walk away from Cal Poly with wicked calf muscles.</li>



<li>Take a Tour What better way to get acquainted with the campus than walking with Cal Poly’s very own Poly Reps? These charismatic students offer <a href="https://admissions.calpoly.edu/green-and-gold">tours</a> every hour on Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 2 p.m. each day. Tours will meet in the University Union on Friday and on Dexter Lawn on Saturday.</li>



<li>Stay Hydrated All the hustle and bustle of Open House can easily render anyone exhausted. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to beat the heat and stay energized all weekend long. Pro tip: Bring a reusable water bottle, and keep it filled constantly. Don’t have one? Head to the University Store!</li>



<li>Hit the Farmer’s Market Get a taste of San Luis Obispo community culture as well as delicious local foods at the world-famous Farmers’ Market on Thursday, April 11 from 6–9 p.m. This is the very first event of Open House, and a perfect opportunity to explore downtown SLO.</li>



<li>Check out the Club Fair At a glance, browsing over 200 clubs and organizations might seem intimidating. However, all the excited students manning those booths know exactly what it’s like to be in your shoes, and they’ve been waiting all year to tell you about what makes their club uniquely awesome. Don’t be afraid to start learning by doing on Saturday, April 13, and chat with some people who might just become your peers in the near future.</li>



<li>Wrap Up with the Poly Royal Celebration See a long-standing Cal Poly tradition in action Saturday, Apr. 13, celebrated by the entire Mustang community. Watch the Poly Royal Parade, complete with floats and performances from the Cal Poly band and Cal Poly cheer, stunt and dance teams. Don’t miss other premier special events including the truck and tractor pull, trust me you want to see this, and t<a href="https://tickets.calpoly.edu/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=polyrodeo2019&amp;BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=">he Poly Royal Rodeo, the largest college rodeo in the world.</a></li>
