Want to walk and talk with a cop? Now’s your chance

Whether they are patrolling in cars, working with K9s or even strolling on foot, chances are you’ve seen Cal Poly police officers at work. Now, it’s your turn to get to know them outside their boots and gear.

With the Cal Poly Police Department (CPPD) officers’ new monthly event, Walkie Talkie Thursdays, you can chat with a cop face-to-face. The third Thursday of each month, CPPD is offering an opportunity for anyone to get outside to walk and talk with an officer in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

What can you talk about, exactly? The answer is, well, anything you want. There won’t be speeches or specific topics planned — the point is to have informal conversations about what matters to you. No matter if you want to learn about their background, how to become a police officer yourself or simply how their day is going — it’s all fair game.

The first Walkie Talkie launched Thursday, Feb. 20. Participants met in the University Union at 11 a.m. during UU hour for a 30-minute casual walk around campus with Cal Poly Police Chief George Hughes. This is a new chance to leave the classroom or office, and engage with a member of law enforcement in a way you might have never had the chance to before.

Through simple conversations, both community members and officers are able to form relationships and get to know each other better, one walk at a time.

Mark your calendar for future Walkie Talkie Thursdays, including March 19, April 16 and May 21. No RSVP is required. Keep an eye out for different on-campus locations, which will be announced ahead of time.
